How this money reaches Tennessee: this is a formula program. The federal government sends it to the state (or to large cities and counties), and a Tennessee agency usually passes it on to local groups as pass-through grants. Ask the state agency that runs it, or your regional development district, when their next local round opens.

What it pays for

To provide congressionally mandated grants to States, Tribes, Territories, the Freely Associated States, the District of Columbia, Certified Local Governments, and other applicants as defined by Congress, to assist in the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties by such means as education, survey, planning, technical assistance, preservation, documentation, and financial incentives like grants and tax credits available for historic properties. Congressionally mandated grants may be in the form of formula grants or congressionally directed spending in the form of community-project funding.

How applications are judged

Specific evaluation criteria are included in the funding announcements posted on www.grants.gov. Each State selects sub-grant proposals for funding in accordance with its own priorities within federal requirements.

Match

Matching Requirements: Formula grants are awarded at a ratio of 60 percent Federal, 40 percent State (public and/or private funds and/or allowable in-kind contributions). American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands and Virgin Islands are exempt from matching share per Public Law 96-205. Project grants (Congressionally Directed Spending in the form of Community-Project Funding) do not have a matching requirement unless otherwise provided by law.
