What it pays for

Created by Congress in 1984, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those investments with private funds. The Foundation�s method is simple and effective to work with a full complement of individuals, foundations, government agencies, nonprofits, and corporations to identify and fund the Nation�s most intractable conservation challenges.

Who can apply

Program authorized for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) only.

Match

Funds shall be matched on at least a one-for-one basis by the Foundation or its sub-recipients.

Examples of funded projects

Fiscal year 2025: In 2025, NFWF's active annual granting match program had 37 active projects which had been funded or were about to be funded. These projects have received $2.9 million in appropriations leveraged with $5.2 million in other federal funds and $12.7 million in grantee match and non-federal funds for an overall conservation impact of $20.8 million.
