About this grant

The purpose of this program is to improve the lives of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), including those with medical complexity (CMC) and their families, by establishing and maintaining the research infrastructure needed to generate evidence-based solutions that help them thrive across the lifespan and participate fully in their communities. This research infrastructure will be used to better understand promising approaches for interventions and measurement for CYSHCN including measures related to well-being and engagement that could be integrated into services and supports that families need.

Who can apply, from the official notice

Eligibility is limited to domestic public or non-profit institutions of higher learning and public or private non-profit agencies engaged in research or in programs relating to maternal and child health and/or services for children with special health care needs. See 42 CFR § 51a.3(b). Domestic faith-based and community-based organizations, tribes, and tribal organizations are eligible to apply.

Funders check the exact site or address. Look yours up in HRSA's Find Shortage Areas tool. It also lists facility designations, such as health centers, which HRSA's download leaves out.

Source: HRSA, shortage area data downloads (HPSA and MUA/P files), as of Oct 8, 2026. Withdrawn designations are left out. Higher HPSA scores mean more need.
