About this grant

The purpose of this notice is to solicit applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2026 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program. The goal of the program is to fund projects that will have a significant local or regional impact and improve transportation infrastructure. BUILD grants will be awarded on a competitive basis, per statute, for planning or constructing surface transportation infrastructure projects that will improve safety; environmental sustainability; quality of life; mobility and community connectivity; economic competitiveness and opportunity including tourism; state of good repair; partnership and collaboration; and innovation. Applicants must submit their applications via Valid Eval at: • Capital Grants: https://usg.valideval.com/teams/usdot_build_2026_capital/signup • Planning Grants: https://usg.valideval.com/teams/usdot_build_2026_planning/signup DO NOT SUBMIT APPLICATIONS THROUGH GRANTS.GOV All applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM EDT on February 24, 2026. Applications cannot be submitted into Valid Eval after the deadline. Late applications will not be considered.

Eligibility (from the notice)

States and the District of Columbia, any territory or possession of the United States, a unit of local government, a public agency or publicly chartered authority established by one or more States, a special purpose district or public authority with a transportation function (including a port authority), A Federally recognized Indian Tribe or a consortium of such Indian Tribes,a transit agency, or a multi-State or multijurisdictional group of entities that are separately eligible.

Matching requirements

This program has no statutory formula. This program has matching requirements. The Federal share of the costs for which an expenditure is made under this program may be up to 80 percent, however, the Department may increase the Federal share of costs above 80 percent for projects located in rural areas, areas of persistent poverty, or historically disadvantaged communities (as defined in the NOFO).This program has MOE requirements, see funding agency for further details.
