About this grant
The Office of the Under Secretary of War (OUSW), intends to award non-research cooperative agreements (CA) to help manage and sustain Department of War (DoW) land in the United States. The DoW Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program, and Legacy Resource Management Program (Legacy Program) fund high priority national and regional natural and cultural resources projects that enhance installation resilience and environmental objectives and support military readiness.

Projects are screened based on whether they meet legislative criteria and current military and natural or cultural resources management needs. They are prioritized based on such criteria as specific relevance, transferability, broad applicability, return on investment, presence of matching funds, and past performance of the principal investigator.

Examples of funded projects
Fiscal Year2025: SERDP/ESTCP
� Demonstrations of prototype Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) cleanup technologies at military installations.
� Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) detection and classification technology demonstrations at underwater military sites.
� Development of next generation wildland fire monitoring and modeling tools across DoW, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to protect federal lands and military infrastructure from severe wildfire threats.
� Improve our understanding of the fate and transport of PFAS in unsaturated systems, including their transport through the vadose zone and capillary fringe to the water table.
� Further refine the Sediment Volume Search Sonar (SVSS), which provides a more detailed survey in water depths less than 5 meters. SVSS was tested at an ESTCP funded demonstration site, and if results are promising the system will be tested at a live munitions response site.
� Development of next generation wildland fire monitoring and modeling tools across DoW, the USFS, and the USFWS to protect federal lands and military infrastructure from severe wildfire threats.
